Case Study: Regal Cinema Mobile Booking App
Project type
Mobile Booking Application
Date
2023
I was commissioned by the owner of a small independent cinema in Fordingbridge, Hampshire to design a bespoke mobile booking application. My objective was to make the booking process as simple and streamlined as possible while maintaining the charm of their independent brand.
Discovery and Strategic Research Discovery
I began with a comprehensive competitive audit, analysing industry leaders to identify common friction points and successful user journeys. I also looked into current UX best practices and emerging design trends. This enabled me to establish a framework that prioritised intuitive navigation and accessibility.
Iterative Wireframing and User Flow
Using my research, I developed a low-fidelity architectural wireframe focused on optimising the conversion funnel. This was an iterative process; I organised several collaborative workshops with the cinema’s internal team to align the user flow with their operational requirements. We refined the information architecture based on their feedback until we achieved a seamless, approved blueprint.
Brand Integration and Visual Identity
To ensure continuity of brand experience, I translated the cinema's established brand identity, including their signature colour palette, typography, and iconography into a mobile-first UI design. The goal was to create a visual extension of their existing web presence that felt premium yet familiar to their loyal customer base.
Enhancing Emotional Design
To differentiate the app, I integrated micro-interactions that evoke the magic of the cinema. These included:
• Custom Loading States: A bespoke animation mimicking the sweeping motion of cinema curtains.
• Thematic Assets: A vintage clapperboard animation utilizing "Lights, Camera, Action" to celebrate the cinematic experience. These "delight" moments significantly increased stakeholder buy-in and have since become a favourite feature among users.
Technical Collaboration and Deployment
Throughout the project, I acted as a link between the client and a third-party development company. I collaborated closely with their engineers to:
• Ensure technical feasibility for both iOS and Android environments.
• Address platform-specific UI constraints (Human Interface Guidelines vs. Material Design).
• Coordinate the backend integration with the cinema’s legacy booking systems.
Launch and Post-Launch Optimisation
Following a seven-month development cycle, the app successfully launched on both major platforms. Post-launch, I conducted a UX retrospective using quantitative data and qualitative customer feedback. While the initial reception was overwhelmingly positive, we proactively identified areas for improvement. I collaborated with the team on a roadmap for future feature implementations based on this real-world user data.
