Nina Russell - Fine Oil Paintings

Biography

Nina Russell

Nina Russell (Reid)

After graduating in sculpture from Grays School of Art, Aberdeen at the age of 20, Nina took a job in Sweden mucking out stables and exercising horses. During the year she spent in Staffanstorp she continued to draw and created horse sculptures out of mild steel at a local blacksmiths. In 1982 she completed teacher training in Edinburgh but returned to Sweden the following year to produce more sculpture in a workshop in Malmö. She taught in Glasgow for a number of years before moving to Dunlop, Ayrshire with her husband and four daughters.

Having thus travelled Nina has many sculptures and paintings in private collections throughout Scotland and Scandinavia. Her equestrian paintings are informed by her in depth study of the horse in sculpted and living form. Nina gently sculpts the paint with subtle use of impasto, leaving visible brush strokes where appropriate. It is always her aim to capture the true nature and character of the subject, but also to explore the expressive qualities of paint. Her non-commission pieces are more diverse in subject and approach. A range of surfaces, techniques and materials are used to bring life and vibrancy to the work.

Nina continues to teach in the local community, running her own classes and staging exhibitions on their behalf. She also assists with scenic painting at Centrestage Music Theatre in Kilmarnock. The paintings on this website are not for sale, but if you would like to discuss a commision or view other work for sale, don't hesitate to contact Nina.
